The Flash interactive features both total carbon emissions and emissions per capita statistics from a variety of nations. This project was created using data from the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center and an internal Django database. Flash visualizations were created by information from the database and custom animations on the Flash timeline. Country profiles linked from the interactive are a combination of that data and Google Charts.

This project is the second in our Obama Accountability series, the first being Head Count: Tracking Obama's Appointees. The Flash interactive analysis piece in POTUS Tracker uses the Flare visualization package for the opening treemap issue view. The backend runs on a Django database.

Features include: issue and event type codes, a directory of everyone Obama has officially met with and how many times, a full archive of Obama's daily schedule going back to his inauguration and advanced search capability.

Developing this map was a leap of faith. While the Bureau of Labor Statistics is a treasure trove of economic and employment data, the files are far too granular to eyeball for a sense of the big picture. The county-by-county employment data for this map came as a 77MB file that was far too large to stick into Excel and sort by year or location. So it wasn't until three-quarters of the way through the development of this map that I first got a real look at the data.

The story here speaks for itself; in the past year, virtually every part of America has seen a catastrophic decline in employment. While it's a bit morbid to marvel over, it is interesting to watch the red circles cascade through the country, striking first in areas like Michigan and spreading from there. Normally, I think that a good editorial multimedia project should be accompanied by a short narrative that guides readers through the data to get them started. In this case, however, the storyline was all too apparent without my gilded prose.

The District of Columbia is in the process of balancing its budget for fiscal 2010 in a year when, because of the poor economy, it will collect 13 percent less revenue than the $5.8 billion necessary to keep spending on services at the current level. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) recently proposed a budget of $5.4 billion that combines spending reductions with increases of some taxes and fees to close the city's $777 million revenue gap.
